Min-Ah discovers a shared diary and is soon fascinated to learn that two people she thought to be very close friends have in fact begun a forbidden romance at her school. She finds herself unable to tear her eyes away from the literally page-turning high drama of her classmates’ lives, and the allure of the secret diary begins to take over. When one of the diary’s writers is found dead from an apparent suicide, rumors spread and Min-Ah begins to feel a strange presence. The once-tranquil school is transformed into a place of morbid terror, as if the words written in the journal, “memento mori” (remember the dead), have come to life.

'School can be horrible and stupid for both teachers and children: you can have such bad memories, almost like witnessing a tragic death…' Whispering Corridors is set in a fairly typical all-female school in Korea, called Jookran High School For Girls, and the story begins on the night before the first day of the new school year. A female teacher called Mrs Park (better known by her unaffectionate nickname ‘Old Fox’ on account of her nasty behaviour and treatment of the students), has discovered something mysterious and weird concerning a late pupil of the school called Jin-ju. Jin-ju had committed suicide in the school’s art rooms nine years previously, and her ghost was said to haunt the art rooms which had been closed up after the incident.

Adaptation d'un roman rabelaisien de Claude Tillier, ce film d'Edouard Molinaro offre un rôle un or à Jacques Brel, qui incarne un médecin paillard au grand coeur, à la fine lame et à la rancune tenace. Le film oscille en permanence entre la comédie de moeurs, le vaudeville, la farce et l'aventure historique, avec beaucoup de décontraction; la réalisation s'avère parfois un peu datée, avec profusion de zooms pas toujours nécessaire, mais s'avère durant tout le film d'une légéreté qui sert avec bonheur un rythme échevelé. Les comédiens semblent prendre beaucoup de plaisir, plaisir partagé par le spectateur. Un très agréable moment, et un film indispensable pour tout fan de Brel (qui a également signé la musique).
