Le jeune Henry se joint à l'équipe de Jack Stanton, gouverneur d'un Etat du Sud et candidat aux élections présidentielles. Conseillers médiatiques, stratèges, coups bas... tout un univers gravite autour de Jack pour l'accompagner dans sa chasse aux bulletins de vote. Mais ce qui séduit le plus Henry, c'est Susan, la femme charismatique du candidat. Ensemble, ils vont écrire une page de l'Histoire américaine... si les affaires en les rattrapent pas. Mike Nichols a parfaitement intégré la mécanique de l'efficacité hollywoodienne : de grands acteurs (Emma Thompson, John Travolta et Kathy Bates), un scénario solide avec moult rebondissements, une équipe technique chevronnée. Une mécanique parfaite en prise directe avec l'actualité des aventures extra-conjugales du président Clinton. Le film fit l'ouverture du festival de Cannes 1998.

After three years as a congressional aide on Capitol Hill, Henry Burton (Adrian Lester) is renowned as a brilliant political strategist, but he has grown increasingly disenchanted with politics. Though cynical, he is still looking for someone doing something he can believe in. But Henry is positive that someone is not Governor Jack Stanton (John Travolta), a virtually unknown southern governor who is running for President of the United States. Stanton is crisscrossing primary states but not yet tracking in the polls. A dark horse who could miss the race, the governor desperately wants Henry Burton on his team.

Dans sa luxueuse résidence du New Jersey, Roberta s'ennuie de sa vie trop bourgeoise. Même Gary, son publiciste de mari, n'y peut rien. Romantique, elle rêve d'autres aventures à la lecture de petites annonces. En remarquant à plusieurs reprises celle-ci : «Recherche Susan désespérément» signée d'un certain Jim, elle décide d'en savoir plus... Allure punk, chevelure ébouriffée, Susan vit au jour le jour. Arrivant à New York pour rejoindre Jim, elle apprend la mort de Meeker et qu'elle est recherchée par la police. Jim s'en inquiète et charge Dez, un ami, de veiller sur Susan. Roberta est parvenue à trouver la trace de Susan. Elle va même jusqu'à racheter la veste dont elle vient de se défaire dans une boutique de mode. Ainsi Roberta se trouve sous la menace de Nolan, qui a «liquidé» Meeker et la prend pour Susan...
