1895. Jules Fadinard, rentier, est sur le point d'épouser Hélène Nonancourt, fille d'un gros pépiniériste. Alors qu'il traverse le bois en cabriolet pour se rendre à la noce, son cheval fait sa pitance d'un chapeau de paille d'Italie trônant sur un buisson. Fureur du lieutenant Tavernier qui était en train de conter fleurette à la malheureuse propriétaire du chapeau, la charmante Anaïs de Beauperthuis, laquelle est mariée et ne peut plus regagner le logis sans son couvre-chef. L'offensé menace Fadinard des pires représailles s'il ne parvient pas à retrouver un autre chapeau. Mais la noce est là, et le malheureux, pris de court, quitte la mairie au moindre prétexte pour filer chez la modiste. Or, un tel chapeau est un ornement rare, difficile à trouver. Pendant le repas et les quadrilles la course au chapeau continue, avec le lieutenant toujours dans la coulisse. Le beau-père, le laquais, les voisins, les invités de la noce et jusqu'au mari de la belle infidèle, alerté par mégarde, tout le monde s'en mêle. Un vieil oncle sourd met le comble à la confusion... C'est d'ailleurs ce dernier qui, sans le savoir, ramènera le calme : le cadeau qu'il a apporté pour la mariée n'est autre en effet qu'un magnifique chapeau de paille d'Italie.
The story set in 1889 concerns a bridegroom on his way to his wedding who has the misfortune to have his horse eat a lady's straw hat which he has to replace. The lady in question is a married woman out flirting with a handsome young officer in the Bois de Vincennes. She has a jealous husband and can not arrive home without the hat. The wedding takes second place in the desperate effort of Fadinard, the groom, to get a replacement. The wedding guests grow impatient. The clandestine pair settle down in Fadinard's flat and threaten to wreck it. There is much to-ing and fro-ing before the dilemma is resolved and the wife can be found sleeping peacefully at home by her husband with the hat lying intact beside her.

A Java, en 1942, un camp de prisonniers anglais aux mains des japonais est commandé par Yonoi. Il impose à ses prisonniers le spectacle de l'exécution d'un prisonnier coréen et les oblige à jeûner. Un des prisonniers, Celliers, étreint Yonoi au moment où celui-ci décide d'exécuter le capitaine Hicksley. Celliers est enterré jusqu'au cou, et se trouve condamné à une mort lente. Yonoi vient lui couper une mèche de cheveux.
A highly unusual war movie with as many detractors as fans, this English-language feature directed by Nagisa Oshima (In the Realm of the Senses) stars David Bowie as a silent, ethereal POW in a Japanese camp. Protesting--via his own enigmatic rebellion--the camp's brutal conditions and treatment of prisoners, Bowie's character earns the respect of the camp commandant (Ryuichi Sakamoto). While the two seem locked in an unspoken, spiritual understanding, another prisoner (Tom Conti) engages in a more conventional resistance against a monstrous sergeant (Takeshi). The film has a way of evoking as many questions as certainties, and it is not always easy to understand the internal logic of the characters' actions. But that's generally true of Oshima's movies, in which the power of certain relationships is almost hallucinatory in self-referential intensity. The cast is outstanding, and Bowie is particularly fascinating in his alien way.

As Reinbert de Leeuw puts it in the Dutch documentary series 'Tone masters' from 1993: "To study this, to really get involved, is in the first place painful, it demands unbelievably much force of the player, dynamic signatures range between 3 and 6 fortes. In the beginning I had to stop practising after 10 minutes, because it just got to painful for my hands. And that is a peculiar experience, that you're busy for hours and hours with a piece in which you just hammer away with extreme force on a piano". If you read the accompanying scores, you may see what he is talking about.
