The film opens with the Russian space station Mir being struck by a powerful electrical surge, which is then transmitted to Russian research ship. The ship is disabled and all on board apparently abandon ship. A tugboat, captained by Robert Everton (Donald Sutherland), loses its uninsured cargo, which was the captain's last chance to get out of debt. The tugboat crew happens upon the derelict and decide the ship, loaded with valuable electronics, would be worth a small fortune in salvage. However, they find a surviving female crewmember, Nadia Vinogradiya (Joanna Pacula), ruining their chance of salvaging the ship (it would have to be completely abandoned for their plan to work legally).

Pour fêter la fin de l'année scolaire, Wendy et ses amis ont décidé de se retrouver dans un parc d'attractions. La soirée s'annonce comme la plus fun de l'année. Pourtant, au moment d'embarquer dans un immense roller coaster, Wendy a un terrible pressentiment. Alors que tous les autres se moquent d'elle, elle quitte l'attraction avec Kevin. Quelques instants plus tard, horrifiée, la jeune fille voit les wagons lancés à toute allure sortir des rails à une hauteur vertigineuse, tuant ses amis. Elle et quelques autres viennent de manquer le rendez-vous que leur avait fixé la mort. Ils vont découvrir que ce n'est pas forcément une chance. Peu de temps après, le destin rattrape brutalement l'un des survivants. Wendy comprend que, sur les photos qu'elle a prises lors de cette tragique soirée, certains indices semblent désigner les prochaines victimes et ce qui les attend...

Like many American International films of its era, How to Make a Monster was sold to distributors on the basis of its title alone: only after theatrical play dates had been established did anyone get around to writing a script! Robert H.
