As a long-time and avid fan of Roxy Music and Bryan Ferry, I have to admit that I was a bit skeptical of the thought of Bryan Ferry doing a whole album of Dylan music. But - his interpretations of each song is brilliant! Ferry puts his heart and soul into each song. It is obvious that he is 'into' it. He plays more harmonica than ever before, and is 'soulful'. The band, overall, is tight and each version of Dylan's songs, actually, improves somewhat on the originals.

After the success of his glam-rockish TRANSFORMER, the expectation was that Lou Reed would plow deeper into commercial territory. As usual, Reed delighted in confounding expectations. BERLIN is a song cycle that uses the decadence of its namesake and some Brecht/Weill-esque orchestrations to tell a story of two psychically damaged people and their doomed relationship. (Aided by Berlin producer Bob Ezrin, Pink Floyd would attempt a similar feat several years later on THE WALL).

Ranked #55 in NME's list of the `Greatest Albums Of All Time.'

After a tepid solo debut, Lou Reed's post-Velvet Underground standing looked dicey. Fortunately, David Bowie and his guitarist Mick Ronson stepped in to help Reed craft one of the best albums of his career. TRANSFORMER built on the stripped-down, ... Full Descriptionquirky pop of LOADED-era VU, infusing it with the androgynous, cheeky glitz of the glam era (the bleached-out black-and-white cover photo of Reed in eye makeup is a giveaway), not to mention a fair bit of Ronson's guitar muscle.

Greek rock first peaked in the early seventies, while Greece was still ruled by a military dictatorship. Bands include Socrates Drank The Conium (progressive hard rock with English lyrics), Exadaktylos (humorist-political lyrics), Peloma Bokiou (Santana-like Latin rock with Greek lyrics), Poll (folk with vocal harmonies, Greek lyrics).
Sufjan Stevens - The Avalanche [Outtakes & Extras from the Illinois Album] (2006)

Sufjan Stevens - The Avalanche [Outtakes & Extras from the Illinois Album] (2006)

Genre: Indie Rock

Since Illinois had initially been conceived as a double-disc set, it's somewhat less astounding that these "outtakes and extras" often sound like they would fit smoothly into the "real" album's tracklist. Stevens also went back to retool and polish once he decided to release The Avalanche, so it's not like these are just scraps from the cutting room floor. Brief instrumental sketches like "Inaugural Pop Music for Jane Margaret Byrne" feel somewhat unrealized, but are the sorts of quirky, pace-setting interludes to which Stevens has often gravitated. Doing a final tally at the end, it turns out that there's about the same number of good songs on The Avalanche as on Illinois, although the very best of the batch was cherry-picked for the latter.

This is KANSAS's debut album. Now, I have to admit, I did not grow up listening to this album. My interest in KANSAS's music came a little later, after hearing such classics as Carry On Wayward Son and Dust in the Wind on the radio as a youth. Even though I owned Leftoverture (1976) and liked it very much, I never had the interest to go back and explore the band's back-catalog. Now, fast-forward 25 years. As a middle-aged adult who still has a big interest in music, I begin to replace many of my old first issue CD's purchased in the 80's with newly "remastered" versions. After purchasing Leftoverture and Point of Know Return and being amazed at the new sound quality (plus bonus Live tracks!) It began a renewed interest in the music of KANSAS. Also, I had slowly generated much more of an interest in Progressive Rock, which I now understand KANSAS to be a participant in. Eventually I purchased their debut, and boy, was I surprised by the great songs that I had never heard before. Songs played with the energy of a young band hungry for success.

What a blessing this DVD is. Unfortunately it is much shorter than the actual concert, but we need to learn to appreciate what is offered, and that is applicable here. Second to only the QPR DVD's, you won't find a better live document of this incredible band, especially this early in their career.
