Using the monicker 'Incredible' was no flash banner, it was true. Smith defined the Hammond organ as a jazz instrument and milked and bled it to its limit. The sub-credit for guitarist Kenny Burrell and drummer Grady Tate is also well deserved. This is the ultimate groovy, smokey jazz trio record that Smith made. The title track has been used for countless radio trailers over the years, while the often covered Duke Ellington classic, 'Satin Doll', is given extra special effort. Burrell has worked with Smith more than any other musician. His mellow tone and Smith's treble notes blend like cucumber and salmon.

The most notable retrospective praise came in 2003 from the British magazine, NME, who rated Forever Changes #6 on their list of greatest albums of all time. In 1998 Q magazine readers voted Forever Changes the 82nd greatest album of all time. In Joe S. Harrington's Top 100 Albums it comes in at #69. Rolling Stone magazine ranked Forever Changes 40th in its list of the 500 greatest albums of all time in the December 11, 2003 issue. In a special issue of Mojo magazine, it was ranked the second greatest psychedelic album of all time, while in 1995 it made #11 in Mojo's list of the 100 Greatest Albums Ever Made.[2] Forever Changes was ranked 83rd in a 2005 survey held by British television's Channel 4 to determine the 100 greatest albums of all time.

For many years Anita O’Day has been regarded as one of the few original jazz singers still active on the jazz scene. Along with Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, and the late Mildred Bailey, Anita helped found a special school of singing, and among some of the best-known derivative singers from the Anita-Source are June Christy and Chris Connor.

It would be easy to be influenced by, derive from, or directly imitate Anita, but none of her followers so far has been able to capture her innate soul and feeling for the beat. Anita sings, as a matter of fact, pretty much like a musician plays an instrument, with her constant attention to the swing inherent in good jazz.

This is the fifth of the Anita-Verve albums, and in many ways, as some critics have pointed out, it possibly may be her best.
