There are so many talented young singer-songwriters in Texas that it’s hard to pick who might be the few that will pull out of the pack and actually make a living performing. Many have tried but few succeed due to various circumstances, luck and fate. Mr. Carll, in my opinion, has a great chance of being one of the fortunate few. This is his debut CD, and it is comprised of twelve great songs with lyrics that draw you into a story. He is a country / folk poet, not a cowboy poet but more of a horny drunk poet. Lord, can’t we all relate to that? He was recently named Best New Artist and Best Folk Artist at the prestigious Houston Press Awards.

The Geography of Light features both the luscious acoustic contemporary folk that drew me to Newcomer on her first solo album, Visions and Dreams, as well as the storytelling that brings to life the characters described, as on her last album, Regulars and Refugees. The album also contains songs that focus on spirituality, as she has done in the past. Newcomer's take on modern, progressive spirituality is accessible for people of many faiths, and she approaches it with the same sensitivity that she brings to all of her songwriting. In fact, if one is not paying close attention, the songs seem to stem more from basic human truths than any sort of discernible theology.

Yes, there are a few different versions of "Living in the Past" floating around, and I still have the original LP from which I can compare them all. I own the Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab, 2-disc, Original Master Recording UltraDiscII GOLD CD and it is the ONLY COMPLETE VERSION CURRENTLY AVAILABLE! With a grand total of 23 tracks, not to mention a faithful reproduction of the 35 page booklet included in the original album, this version has sonic quality far superior to any "CD" version you will ever hear. This is as close as you'll get to listening to the orginal "LP" on the finest turntable system. It's obvious that great care was taken when this package was put together, from the remastering to the detail that went into the booklet and packaging. In fact, it is probably the best sounding MFSL CD that I own, and I have quite a few. So, from one "Tull Fan" to another, this is the definitive version. I realize that it's likely to set you back few bucks (I've seen some of the prices!), but if you can find it, BUY IT! It's a worthy investment. | ” |

Ommadawn is a record album written and mostly performed by Mike Oldfield. It is his third album, released in 1975 (see 1975 in music). The cover photograph was by David Bailey. It peaked at #4 on the UK albums chart. As with Hergest Ridge and Tubular Bells, Ommadawn is another two-movement work. Here Oldfield sought out the ancient Celtic influence on English music and composed for traditional instruments such as Northumbrian bagpipes on the original LP version.

Hergest Ridge is a record album, written and mostly performed by Mike Oldfield released in 1974. It was his second album and like its predecessor, Tubular Bells, was number 1 in the UK album charts, but unlike its predecessor, it went straight in at the top spot. After being in the spotlight for Tubular Bells, something that Oldfield found uncomfortable, he retreated to the English countryside to work on his next opus. Hergest Ridge, named after a hill on the border of Herefordshire and Wales near where he was living at the time, was the result. Hergest Ridge was the number one album the week of 14 September 1974 and remained so for three weeks until being knocked out of the spot by its predecessor Tubular Bells. Oldfield is thus one of only three artists (along with The Beatles and Bob Dylan) to have defeated themselves in this manner.
