Over the past decade, Mythos has produced a series of best-selling recordings featuring their unique fusion of classical music, jazz, pop, electronic, ambient, and musical influences from around the world. Written and performed by pianist Bob D'Eith and guitarist Paul Schmidt, with contributions from some of Canada's most outstanding musicians, the music Mythos makes is hauntingly beautiful and otherworldly. Purity is the Vancouver-based duo's latest CD release, and it continues their unique musical fusion. Veteran jazz bassist Rene Worst teams up with worldbeat percussionist Pepe Danza to ground Mythos's seductive melodies with sensuous, juicy rhythms. Another Vancouver-based jazz stalwart, vocalist Jennifer Scott, contributes ethereal, soaring vocals to the evocative mix, and violinist Cameron Wilson and cellist Finn Manniche add hypnotic string embellishment to this edition of the band's singular sound. Mythos has sold over 100,000 recordings over the course of three previously released albums. Mythos, Reality of a Dreamer, and Eternity share a similar artistic focus with the recently released Purity. Each features Gil Bruvel's surrealist, dream-like illustrations in the cover artwork, underlining the recordings' singular sound and vision.

I am a big fan of New Age music and the genre in a big way and I am always looking to listen to new artists from this genre. I came across 'Australis' in a music search and decided to take a punt and purchased this album. I didn't know what to expect so having listened to this album 3 times already. I can say I am pleasantly surprised. This album was released midway through 2005 and the album is New Age with a ambient feel to it. Another great thing about this album is the artwork that shows the care and feeling that went into the production of this beautiful set of work. The front cover is of a butterfly on sanded back paper. The insides of the album on the left hand side is a Mayan symbol (mayan calender).

It's an attractive sound that Canadians Bob D'Eith (piano, keyboards) and Paul Schmidt (classical guitar) have cobbled together as Mythos, supplementing their largely pastel instrumentation with stylish, subdued grooves and airy female vocalese. The result is an uncomplicated yet appealing brand of pop instrumental music that lies somewhere east of trip-hop and west of crossover classical, and at its best occasionally brings to mind the quieter instrumental passages once heard from 10cc, OMD, or Simple Minds. Mythos's sound (similar to Enigma, with less obtrusive vocal elements) is more New Age than pop-rock, and during a track such as "Vision I" the first image your mind's eye might conjure up is a mirror ball. Yet the overall vibe D'Eith and Schmidt create is a worthwhile variation on the New Age theme--mostly instrumentals (plus a concluding vocal track) that are energized yet still relaxing--compositions with a pulse, a heart, and just a hint of mystery.
