THE GRAMOPHONE AWARDS - RECORD OF THE YEAR 1977-2007
Posted By: Flush | Date: 30 Jul 2008 07:00 | Comments: 178

The Classic FM Gramophone Awards - often referred to as "the Oscars of the classical music world" - continue to grow in stature and significance, and for 2007 Gramophone has announced a change in the awards process.

From the hundreds of recordings released between June 1 and May 31 the music industry is asked to nominate the discs it wishes to be considered for each Award. This long list is then voted on by panels of specialist critics to produce a short list of six discs per category (these are: Early Music, Baroque Vocal, Baroque Instrumental, Chamber, Choral, Concerto, Contemporary, DVD, Historic reissue, Historic archive, Instrumental, Opera, Orchestral, Recital and Vocal).

At the round two stage, Gramophone critics are asked to reduce these six to one winner in each category. The resulting discs will each receive a Classic FM Gramophone Award (this returns to the original method of making the awards).

Another round which takes into account the voting in the First Round as well as soliciting votes from a smaller panel of critics produces the Record of the Year.

At the Awards ceremony the following awards are presented.

  • 15 record awards: one of which will also be
  • The Record of the Year
  • Artist of the Year
  • Lifetime Achievement
  • Editor's Choice
  • Special Achievement
  • An Innovation Award (in association with Classic FM magazine)
  • Young Artist of the Year (for a musician aged under 30 on June 1)
  • Record Label of the Year

You can check out all of the award winners in the other categories and read their reviews by visiting Gramophone's website and browse through their extensive online database which you'll find here:

Collecting the Albums - During the proccess of collecting these recordings, I've noticed that a few of the original award winning records are no longer easily available. In such cases they have therefore been replaced with a newer release which of course features the very same recording as the original. Same same but different you know. All in all I have collected the albums and their scans from various sources. Most has been ripped and scanned by myself, some has been downloaded getting the music from somewhere and the scans from somewhere else. In other words, one big mix of material forming a great collection.

Available Scans - You'll find that you have the option to download the available scans separately. The links for the scans are found in the same text file as the links for the music itself. You will figure it out I'm sure. If you have better scans than the ones included here, you are strongly urged to upload those and share them with the AvaxHome community. This is particularly necessary with the 1978, 1982 and 1985 award winners.

Reporting Errors - Should you surprisingly find any kind of flaws, errors, typos or anything else about this project that is not amazingly accurate, sublimely beautiful or otherwise close to perfect, please let me know about it. Any kind of feedback is higly appreciated as long as it is kept in a friendly and patient tone of course.

Creating Mirrors - If any of you feel a strong need to create mirrors for the albums in this project I will have to ask you only to do so on filehosts other than Rapidshare and not to present the links to such mirrors in a comment but rather send them to me in a personal message. I will then build them into the main project info with proper credits to the uploader.

But enough said. Let's have a look at those albums shall we?!. And the winner is...

Thanks for a very interesting post. I must have poor taste as apart from the Beethoven there is not much I like. Where are the Goldberg Variations?

When I'm older, I'll lift my grandchildren on my lap and tell them about this uploader named Flush and the things he did in a magic place called Avaxland. And their jaws will drop, as did mine when seeing this Gramophone Awards post. Dear Flush, you already reached perfection, this is überperfection, and other new words will have to be invented for your work. As for me, I can only stick to these simple but heartfelt words: thank you, thank you, thank you.

If Avaxhome will organize an "Uploader of the Year" competition, I know already for whom to vote.
Thanks Flush, for this amazing historical series of gems.

Thanks a lot, Flush!
I agree with Nabadanga. Since not all of us are experts at using .cue files, here are a couple of tips (which I found out the hard way) if you have any problems splitting the CD image:

1) Open the cue file with Notepad and look near the top to make sure that the correct CD image file is specified, e.g., change [FILE "CDImage.wav"] to [FILE "CDImage.ape"] if all you have is CDImage.ape. (Or, you could decompress CDImage.ape to CDImage.wav using Monkey's Audio, THEN split it.) [This happens with the Saint-Saëns CDs.]

2) Unfortunately, the folders containing the Saint-Saëns (and, I suspect, many other) cd image files have titles that are way too long, e.g., "2002 [Saint-Saëns] The Romantic Piano Concerto Vol.27 [Hyperion CDA67331][CD1] S.Hough, CBSO, S.Oramo". Bloody ridiculous. Combine this with an equally long filename.ape and you're well over the 256 character filepath maximum. So what happens? You look in the folder where you wanted Cue Splitter to store the split files and half of them are missing. Then you realize the only ones you have are those with the shortest names! So, change the original folder name to "CD1", maybe even moving it higher up the directory tree if necessary, BEFORE you split the CD image. Cue Splitter doesn't warn you when it can't create a split file.
Posted By: Flush Date: 15 Oct 2007 11:31
@maxand
Sorry to hear you find my ways "Bloddy ridiculous"! The folders I've created are named as they are for a good reason I believe, although in this case it makes sence to delete the "1991 [Beethoven]" if you dont plan to keep all the albums together as a collection. I could also start naming the folders GJJHSA or JBEDRH or something and then leave the trouble of giving the folders a proper name to the downloader. I find that ridiculous.

As I see it it's all a matter of making it a habbit to look inside the RAR-file before extracting anything, and inside the CUE-file before splitting anything. And don't decompress or split anything from the desktop as the adress to the desktop is already quiet long. That goes for my uploads as well as for every other downloads you make. That requires a small portion of technical skills but not more than you would expect when you wanna get your hands on music in first class quality. Skills that I for surtain trust the far majority of the members of AvaxHome to have.
Posted By: maxand Date: 15 Oct 2007 16:44
Sorry Flush I didnt mean to fly off the handle like that. It's just that I didn't expect to have to learn to edit .cue files just to extract the single tracks, and also my downloads are already a fair way down the directory tree by the time they arrive. It took me a while to work out why I seemed to be losing tracks.

Absolutely great post, Flush... but something is wrong with Part 3 of the RAR file for CD 1 of La Nozze de Figaro (2004). I keep getting an error uncompressing the 3 RAR files. It extracts all the artwork, the.cue and .log files, but it gives me an error for the .ape file. The two other CDs are OK. Please help if you can. Thanks.

Dear Flush, Thank You for your hard working. But i have some problem with Bartok: 6 String Quartets [DG 423 657-2] Emerson String Quartet. When ive tried to mount .Cue its show UNABLE TO MOUNT IMAGE. INVALID WAVE FORMAT. this is he problem. When i open the CUE file i can see at the top:

PERFORMER "Emerson String Quartet"
TITLE "Bartok; 6 String Quartets [DG 423 657-2] CD2"
FILE "CDImage.ape" WAVE

i think this is correct.

thanks alot.

@ricarpatric
Extract directly from the root of your HD if you are having problems with the length of the filenames.
In WinRAR choose the option "Extract here" and NOT the option "Extract to 'foldername'".

@Zzorglub
Glad you figured it out in the end! ;-)

@Mike2002
There are so many free online translaters outthere so why dont you try one of those if you wana ask me something?!!

@Pan.Sam
"Kata Kabanova" is only 2 CDs and they are both still available through ftp2share.com

@don_will
Dont know which program you are trying to use but I guess it is Daemon Tools. Maybe you have to edit the titel in the CUE-file to make it work with that program but otherwise it works perfectly fine with most other programs including MediaMonkey's CUE-Reader plug-in and Medieval CUE-Splitter.

@Flush,

Just fyi,

There was a little mixed-up for the CD contents in the 5 CDs for 1992, Beethoven symphonies.

CD1 & CD5 were correctly posted as CD1 & CD5 respectively.

However, CD2, CD3 & CD4 were sort of being swapped around.
That is to say, you could not find Symphony No.5 in CD3 as downloaded but it is to be found in either CD2 or CD4 downloaded I could not recall which now.

Actually that´s my first experience @ AvaxHome. The password was not a problem, after some carefully reading I realized it. Problem is I can´t guess/find *login* identity. I did several tries at no avail.
Any help will be welcome.
