17 Hippies that means high-quality crossover-music with many different directions. There is klezmer, cajun, zydeco, a little bit chanson … and of course folk! What ever you want… These excellent musicians are really great! IFNI is their first real studio-release, after two bootlegs and a soundtrack-release, recorded in 2004.

Amanda Shaw is only 16, but she’s been a professional musician, band leader, actress, and singer for more than half of her life. She started on classical violin when she was four and had her concert debut with the Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra when she was only eight, the youngest soloist to ever play with the orchestra. Living in New Orleans with progressive parents, she was going to folk, rock, blues, jazz, and Cajun shows while she was still a kid. Shortly after her Symphony debut, she decided she wanted to try fiddling as well as serious violin playing. She sat in with jazz, blues, and Cajun bands and learned how to play by ear.

The line-up of The Bunch reads like a Who's Who of British folk(rock) with names like Sandy Denny, Richard and Linda (Peters) Thompson, Dave Mattacks, Trevor Lucas and many others, mainly from Fairport Convention and Fotheringay. But here you'll find no reels and hornpipes or bag pipes, recorders and hurdy gurdies. This was more like a bunch of friends going into the studio with just one objective: having loads of fun playing the music from the days they first learned to love music. So this is a rock 'n' roll album, with stompin' pianos and big, big horns. Rock On rocks like hell and does what it promised to do: giving the listener equally good times as the guys and girls in the studio had, playing their versions of well known songs from the likes of Fats Domino, Dion, Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley or Buddy Holly.

This is where Doug Sahm's recording career started. In 1964, Doug Sahm's Markays found themselves sharing the stage with Augie Meyers' Goldens, both opening for British headliners the Dave Clark Five. For several years, Sahm had been pestering producer Huey P. Meaux, nicknamed the "Crazy Cajun," to record him. Meaux, feeling successful with acts like Barbara Lynn and Dale And Grace, was not interested. However, the producer soon found himself without a market when Beatlemania hit America. The story goes that Meaux, not to be outdone by a bunch of British upstarts, headed for San Antonio where he shut himself away in a hotel room with a bountiful supply of Thunderbird wine and every Beatles' record he could find, determined to discover what made them sell.

This album has been out of print for more than ten years and was finally rereleased in 2004. TexMex original Doug Sahm (Sir Douglas Quintet, Texas Tornados) stayed in Canada during the end of the 80's and recorded there this album in 1988 together with Amos Garrett and Gene Taylor. All three are in their finest moments playing and singing this great cd.
