If you 're looking for a break from the contemporary blues pop of Kenny Wayne Shepard or Johnny Lang, try "Deep in the South," a collection of authentic sounding blues from the late Guitar Gabriel, who died in 1996 just as he was gaining critical praise. Released on the Cello label through Sire records, this set showcases Guitar Gabriel's — a.k.a Nyles Jones' — raw vocals and rootsy guitar picking. It is a genuine mix that fans of old-school blues will enjoy.

Marta Gomez was born and raised in Cali, Colombia, and began her musical career performing as part of a choir in her hometown. In her teens she moved to the Colombian capital of Bogota. There, she got into doing recording for radio and TV commercials, but set her sights on bigger things. In 1999, she applied for and was accepted by the Berklee College of Music in Boston, where she won a so-called "best achievement" scholarship. She released her debut CD, Solo Es Vivir last year, and it gained a good deal of praise by the local Boston press. And it was also apparently released in Colombia. Now, on Cantos de Agua Dulce she has received some national distribution in this country, and it is most deserved.

Walker's latest is, alas, also his weakest to date -- strange, since he shares production credit this time with the legendary Steve Cropper.

Mark O'Connor's second CD with his Hot Swing Trio is more than just a salute to the late, legendary jazz violinist Stephane Grappelli; it firmly establishes as him as a bona fide jazz violin virtuoso, thanks to being distributed by a major label this time around.

Carl Orff - Carmina Burana
Classical / Cantata | DVD-rip AVI | Berlin 1989 | 1.06Gb - 3% recovery rec Seiji Ozawa - Kathleen Battle - Thomas Allen - Frank Lopardo - Berliner PO
Classical / Cantata | RCA | APE | 250Mb + 3% recovery rec Seiji Ozawa - Boston SO - Evelyn Mandac - Stanley Kolk - Sherrill Milnes
A fabulous performance of Orff's work. Ozawa's animated conducting style is able to get the best out of this orchestra and chorus. Allen's baritone voice is well suited for this work; while Kathleen Battle gives a smooth, emotional performance. Her voice is just so pure, her singing almost effortless, that she simply stands apart in this cast of great singers.
Long before 'world music' was a widely used term, ethnomusicologist and performer Mickey Hart became enamored with the culture of rhythms. After hooking back up with the Grateful Dead in the mid-'70s, Hart began incorporating advanced time-signatures into the "Drums" portion of the "Rhythm Devils" duets with Bill Kreutzmann (drums). As described in the liner notes, this is something of a soundtrack album for a planet called Dafos (1985).

Usually recordings by college stage bands are to be avoided by all but close relatives since the illusion of professionalism heard in the well-rehearsed ensembles is constantly punctured by amateurish solos. However this CD features flugelhornist Clark Terry and Frank Wess (doubling on flute and tenor) on half of the selections and the orchestra (under the direction of Bob Lark) is fairly strong.
