AvaxHome 3.0 Help F.A.Q. for submitting news

A detailed description for how to submit news items using the new AvaxHome 3.0 Create news entry form.

You must be signed-in/logged-in to post news.

These instructions reflect the state of the software as of 21 March 2006.

News uri-name
News uri-name (Required): Internal page name used by Avax for your news.

This field uniquely identifies your page in the Avax database and becomes part of the http:// address. Character set is restricted to lowercase letters a-z, numeric numbers 0-9, and the special characters underscore "_", backslash "\", and hyphen "-". In short form: [a-z0-9_\-]. No spaces or blanks are permitted.

Choose a name that is descriptive for your news item. For example, "my_music" is too general and too vague; better would be "joe_lopez_y_los_fabulosos" or "joe_pass_six-string_santa_1992".

News name
News name (Required): Title or Name to identify your news.

This will appear at the top of your news item for the viewer to read.

For example,

My super music download

News promoute
News promoute (Required): Short description of your news item that will display in the category search pages. (This is Avax typo, should be promote.)

Include here a brief description of your news item, a sentence or two, along with a picture. Do not include download links. Note that the Avax moderators will always require a topically relevant image with your post.

To insert a picture, mouse over the icon bar to the Insert image button (looks like a mountain range) and click it. This will bring up an Insert Image dialog box in a new window. Type in the URL or Avax-id of the image, or select the Upload box to browse for an image file on your own computer. If you are uploading a file from your own computer or a URL, first click the Send button to perform the upload; when this finishes the Avax-id number of the the image file will be displayed in the first field. Click OK to insert the image into your description. Note that for security reasons all images must reside on the Avax server.

Text effects can be accomplished using other buttons on the icon bar. Mousing over the buttons will pop up a short description of what each button does. If you can't see all the buttons, try reducing the zoom level in your browser.

Note: Unlike the previous version of the Avax software, what you include here does not appear on the News text page, the detail page for your news. So if you want images in both the short and detailed description of your news post, I suggest you copy what you write here and paste it into the News text section that follows.

News text
News text (Required): Detailed description of your news item that will display
on its own page when a viewer clicks read more.

Note: I suggest you copy what you wrote in the above News promoute section and paste it here. The two sections are separate and there is no automatic "cutting" as there was with the previous software.

Include here a detailed description of your news item.
  • This is an example the Insert a pointed list function.

  • Text effects can be accomplished using buttons on the icon bar. Mousing over the buttons will pop up a short description of what each button does. For example, to center text, highlight the text to be centered and click the Align center button. Although it is possible to get very fancy here, this just makes more work for the Avax servers which are already overburdened. So please keep it relatively simple.

  • To insert additional picture(s), mouse over the icon bar to the Insert image button (looks like a mountain range) and click it. This will bring up an Insert Image dialog box in a new window. Type in the URL or Avax-id of the image, or select the Upload box to browse for an image file on your own computer. If you are uploading a file from your own computer or a URL, first click the Send button to perform the upload; when this finishes the Avax-id number of the image file will be displayed in the first field. Click OK to insert the image into your description. Note that for security reasons all images must reside on the Avax server.

  • To insert a clickable download link, click the Insert an url link button (looks like a chain). A dialog box will ask you to enter the URL address, type it in or paste it from Rapidshare, and click OK. Repeat this for each file to be downloaded as part of your news item.

  • This is an example of Quoted text:
    “This is quoted text.”

  • The backslash character \" doesn't seem to show up all the time. It appears to be used as an escape character for the double quote mark in quoted text. Not sure what's going on with it.

News original uri
News original uri (Optional): Original URL source of your news item. (Avax typo, uri should read url.)

For example, you could put a book publishers or an Amazon.com http:// address here to point the reader to the original URL or for more information about your news item. This will become a clickable link when your news item is displayed on the category search page: original news :: read more.

Language
Language: Using the drop-down box, select as appropriate, if necessary.

Display in categories
Display in categories (Required): Which category should the Avax software list your news item in.

Check as appropriate. You should select only one category, the one that best fits your news item. Select more than one only if you have a special reason for doing so.

For categories that have one or more subcategories such as Music->VideoClips or E-Books->Deutch, select at least one subcategory in addition to the parent category. (I've only test this for the Music category, but if the subcategory VideoClips is not also selected, your item will not be listed in the Music category when a viewer clicks on the Music button on the top and bottom of every Avax page.)

When you are finished, scroll to the bottom of the page and click the Preview button in the lower right corner. Make any necessary changes, and when you are finished and ready to submit your news, click the Create button. If there are errors they will be indicated at the top of the page, in red text. Correct as required.

If after pressing Create you get an Error 502 or Error 504 instead of a confirmation screen, your news item has not been processed. In this situation use the Back function in your browser to redisplay the Create news page and press the Create button again.

When your news submission has been accepted, it will go into the moderation-waiting news queue awaiting action by the Avax moderator. You can click on moderation-waiting news to see the items waiting. You can also edit your own news items that are waiting in this queue.

nice manual, well done. the only thing you forgot is to add "Pray that 502/504 error won't appear when you click Create button". ;) ppl, best way to prevent your publication from getting lost during the engine fix and upgrade is higlighting it all, copying it and pasting to any WYSIWYG program like MS Word (ah, and don't forget to save the url of publication images so than you won't upload them one more time). It is also helps when you creat next publications and you can use the older one as a template.

@ Sunsponge Very well done! And great picture :-) @ Semeni4 "Pray that 502/504 error won't appear when you click Create button"." And another problem: Pray that you do not a very secure system. The same bug we discussed yesterday witch results in storing comments to wrong publications will also hit you at this point. If you see just an almost empty page with only the text "Create News" AFTER pressing the "Create" button, your publication is NOT stored and will NEVER show up in the "moderation-waiting news". Only known solution: Same as discussed for the comment bug.

When you do your next update of your text, you might consider to change this to ""Which category ..." :-) In most cases a publication should only be in the one category it directly fits. For example, it makes no sense (to me) that an uploader cross-publishes all his music albums additional in the category news :-)

The entry here is ofr the URL of the host / website a publisher grabbed his news from. For example, if a user publishes that RS reomved the colored letters you have to type in, the "News original URL" wpuld be http://rapidshare.de "News promoute" Of corse just another typo TDz needs to fix. Should be "promote". "News uri-name" Please add some information that the URI chosen by a publisher should me sense and fit to his publication. For example http://www.avaxhome.ws/music/musicfiles.html The URI "musicfiles" would fit to thousands of other publications also. :-) In this example a sense-making URI would be something like "Joe_Lopez_y_Los_Fabulosos" There are much worse examples of strange URIs, but this one I just was able to remember. :-) OK, I better stop here. With the number and speed of ongoing changes, be prepared that keeping your manual uptodate will be a lifetime job :-))

@ Semeni4 @ Bully67 Thanks for your comments. I've updated the FAQ to reflect your suggestions. Yes, it is a great picture, but it's not mine. This tells me that the Avax moderator can modify items before they are published. Also, since I updated it, the date of the news item changed so it is no longer appearing at the top of the news item list. Is there someone you can contact? Thx. And I'll try to keep this updated as needs require.

One tip about the Error 502 & Error 504: Before send the post, copy to the clipboard all you've tiped, because if you get the 502/504 errors, when you go back in your browser, all you've tiped may dissapear and you've to type all again... Just a tip. Great tutorial! Dr. Kimble.-

The Edit function doesn't seem to work. Everything looks fine in the preview pane after the edit, but you're still sending the old version.

But even things which seems to look very easy are very difficult at AvaxHome :-) "Also, since I updated it, the date of the news item changed so it is no longer appearing at the top of the news item list." Eh, no. The date is still set to future, and it still is on the top of the NEWS page. But it disappeared from the MAIN (Home) pages. Same as the Bugtracker disappeared yesterday. Without going into details, this is no technical problem, it's more a "political" problem. I'm working on it since yesterday but the only thing I can tell you _now_ is: Be patient. Yes, I hate to sound like TDz :-)) but it is the only honest answer I can give you at the moment.

After sending an re-edited version of your publication, you need to wait until a moderator re-activates your changed publicaion. Depending on the time you do it, this might be either a few muntes or up to 8 6 hours.

In browsers like Opera or firefox, where you can zoom pages to any size you like for easier reading or editing, the rightmost buttons scroll out of the frame. If you reduce the zoom-level, you will see buttons come back on your screen.

Warning: In the "News promoute" section, do NOT use a URL for the image you must (Avax requirement) insert. Although it does seem to work in Preview mode, then Avax rejects your news because the image is missing. You have to upload the image on the Avax server. Why put such an unneeded burden on the server, and also add to the risk of copyright infrigement?

Nor only Avax himself, EVERY moderator will refuse it without picture. :-) Make sure that you use the IMG pseudo-tag to insert your picture! The preview function displays anything, also pictures called by URL instead of the IMG-pseudo-tag! "You have to upload the image on the Avax server. Why put such an unneeded burden on the server, and also add to the risk of copyright infrigement?" Very easy. To avoid the much higher risk of abuse! Let's imagine you store an URL to a picture stored on your server. After your publication goes public, you could very easy exchange the picture on your server to any kind of advertisement or other shit you like.

Before we go into deeper discussuions of sexless and lazyness I want just remind you to our talks in the old Bugtracker. The google-research about JXSMITH brought up many interesting news :-)) "502's and 504's? Of course, we (bureaucrats) are helpless!" The problem is that you do not understand what's that all about. Based on Alexa-stats for example AvaxHome.ru has about 38 millions page transfers each day. Not only your few page views. And as with all sites, there are "prime times" when each and everyone wants to use AvaxHome. Do you have any idea what a good server costs to handle such a high traffic without bottlenecks? Do you know what highspeed broadband connections for such a traffic cost? Are YOU willing to pay for them?

For handling 38 million page transfers most servers and backbone connections have problems. Can you rememebr the days you joined AvaxHome? How many 502 or 504s did you see? None. There might be some things Avax and me have different views, but not on this topic. Linking to external pictures is a SECURITY HOLE no adminstrator should allow. The data itself is only transfered one time, so no loss of performance or bandwidth when you visit this publiation again.

i find a mountain like a button for uploading a picture, you were right about zooming, but i succeeded only once in posting, my next tries were not successfull becouse uploading of image doesnt working, i can not see it in preview mode.

@ Salahudin OK, we first need to see WHAT goes wrong - either the uploading or the inserting in the editor 1. Uploading When your upload is done, you should see an image number. It might be that your upload is refused if your picture is too large. In that case, you need to reduce your picture and try upload agin 2. Inserting in publication To place your piczure you use the pseudo-tag IMG, together with the number the server assigned to your successfull upload. For example, if you received number 100, then you use [IMG]100[/IMG] The editor tries to help you by inserting the tags for you, but if your cursor is not at correct position, this is no help. So, if you see any other IMG tags not written by you, just remove them.

Here's a tip!
If you want to be prepared for a possible 502 error when posting news...and you don't want to bother having the whole post copied to a text file, just use A.I Roboform. When you have filled in the whole post and are ready to click submit, just bring up the roboform window and tell it to save forms. It will save everything in the right places so if you get an error page and have to start again you just get the post news page up then roboform can 'Fill Forms' and hey presto! Its finished!

Well!
I used this Posting-Guide exactly, and posted the following three ebooks in the relavant section:

1-Current Medical Diagnosis & Treatment 2006
2-Family Medicine 2006
3-The Art of SQL

The first book was released in the eBooks' section after Moderator's View, however the rest of the two books were not released. I don't know what would have been wrong with these two books. but as far as my posts
are concerned, I am pretty sure that these posts were according to all the set rules.

I had also PMed Avax about this problem, showing my interest to know if I was doing anything wrong, so that I should not repeat it again when I plan to post any more book. Unfortunately, I have not received reply of my PM yet.

So I'll request to the senior members to please help me to know about the possibility of "Why my posted topics won't get released in ebooks section after Moderator's View"
I can still see both of these topics in "My News"

Any idea, plz help.

None of the moderators stays online for 24 hours a day :-) Together with the umber of personal mails received, it might take a bit to answer all of them.

Besides above addition to the FAQ to take care for the new AvaxHome 3.0 software, the RULES of the former FAQ do still fit.

"The following are forbidden on the site:

- Creating the new publication without searching it on a site before. Search field is on the right side under the calendar ("SEARCH ON THE SERVER"). Of course, repeating publication (aka repost) is possible (and welcome), if the link in previous publication does not work (dead)."

And yes, hehe, the info about the editor on the new temporary FAQ is also no longer valid. AvaxHome 3.0 software is still under heavy construction, a hard time for all of us.

Can happen sometimes. Hint: use quotation marks to limit the results, for example "Family Medicine 2006" gave a direct hit, while without quoting you will get a big list.

My general hint for questions about moeration and ebooks for english speaking users is: Contact Alexpal. He's a nice guy (most times, hehe) and when he is online he will help you quick. Avax is also vry nice, but as you can guess, he is flooded by mails about each and every thing.

I did. it is empty. Yep, no unanswered mail, great. :-) Either you misspelled my name, or some software updates are in progress.

How should I search for "The Art of SQL"????
I searched for it using all terms, but every time the result was same, that is, zero.
But the book does exists in the database, as U've mentioned its URL in one of your replies here.

Hehe. Yes. A way to have users concentrate to foumulate short and precise mails :-))

About 3 days ago this limit somehow apperead after a software update. I informed TDz and he is investigating it.

A very good question :-) A currently undocumented "feature" of the search engine is to ignore 3-letter searches to avoid too heavy load on the database.

In your case I would suggest to search for the author's name.

The thing is, when I posted the first item it showed in the Home section plus the sections that I had selected for it. After I edited some text in it the post stopped apearing in Home and only showed in E-Books.
In the second case I did the editing just after the post (it surely hadn't been reviewed by the time) and this post never showed once in Home.
The funny thing is that when I try to edit the posts again and attach them to Home section the checkbox isn't enabled to do so.
So my question is this:
Is this a bug or is there a determined criteria by wich the posts show (or not show) in the Home section? I've always thought that every post was listed in Home and the other sections were a form of specializing the scan of the site pages. Am I wrong?
Your answear and time would be greatly apprecieated.

It's not a bug and has nothing to do with software. In this case you deal with real persons, and different persons do have different views.

There is a team of moderators at AvaxHome to handle all that high traffic. When you put up a new publication, a moderator checks it and when everything is OK he confirms it to go public, with some minor bugs, sometimes a moderator might edit it, otherwise he might refuse it. When he confirms it to go public, he decides if it will additional to normal categories also be linked to the manin pages.

Whenever you edit a publication, it also needs to be confirmed again by a moderator.

In your case you had 2 different moderators. The first one decided to put it on main page also, the second decided not to do so. Or a bit sarcastic: If you edit again, it might agin be confirmed for main pages :-) I wrote: MIGHT. If people abuse this game, it might also be deleted or refused :-))

What some people still not understand: The main pages are just a PART of AvaxHome publications. Many great stuff can be found which is not on main pages. It can depend on many things. If for 12 hours no one has upped any music album, even a very bad one might appear on main pages. If 50 people posted books, the next 2 or 5 might not be on main pages, no matter of quality.

You see, it's a complicated topic. depending on many things, INCLUDING personal view of current moderator.

Thnx for the time. I have been wrong all this time and didn't know it! Which demonstrates two things: a)most of the time a person is wrong about a lot of things and doesn't have the slightest idea about it, and b)every day you can learn something if you are really up to it. ;-).
