AvaxHome
Publication
100.000!

100.000 publications

We are damned proud to announce that on March 3rd at 09:23 our member

inem

created publication 100.000 since launch of AvaxHome 2.0 May 2005.

Here is inem's publication: Infernal Affairs 3(DVDRip -2003)

We want to thank all our members for being with us
and making this "little" russian site so special.
Your AvaxHome Team

(Words in russian language will be added soon, sorry)

We're proud of you!

Technical background

The count is based on the publiaction ID. This number is created from our databse (autoincrement) whenever a new publication is created. Moderators do have no influence at all on this number.

We exspected that this new milestone would happen yesterday in the early afternoon. But in real life it turned into a real nightmare. Due to very heavy traffic we had lots of 502s slowing down new publications. And so the critical moment moved into the late night hours, a time almost no one is posting.

Here is exactly what happened: (based on our wrong server clock)

07:47:25 - publication # 99996
08:21:28 - publication # 99997
08:24:49 - publication # 99998 - a great Steely Dan bootleg album
08:40:04 - publication # 99999 - a music album without even a download link
09:13:33 - publication # 100000

And as Murphy's laws teach us, another publication which cannot go online - missing picture, missing info data ... argh ...

After another10 minutes of pain:

09:23:38 - publication # 100001 - inem's DVD rip

In other words: Our publication 100.000 is in fact 100.001 - there is no other way. We cannot celebrate a publication which does not even include a picture and had to be refused..

also BIG thanks to all AH-members for no abusing.

Incredible!!! Can't believe how time had passed.
I swear, I spend more time here than with the family.
I've lost count the number of HDDs I've used up over the 2 years.
OK, I confess, I’m an AvaxHome.ru addict.
I even got to like its 502/503/504 errors.
I finally decided to post on Aug 31, 2005 at 11:29:52, id 4145.
My gut feelings then were that AvaxHome.ru was here to stay.
Congratulations Avax Team and every single person who ever posted (to share and to show gratitude)!!!

Congrats to the team,
I can understand you like to celebrate this milestone of 10k posts and I can even see that you'd like to do this as long as you can, but aren't you exaggerating it a bit by removing the 'post news' link? When can we start working on reaching 20k?
Posted By: Mitsu Date: 03 Mar 2007 17:24
Congratulation. ^^
There is a good friendship here between members and admins.
I think this site is one of the best in his category.
Well done, now it's time to reach the 200.000 for the next year ^^

@Louchuck - great to see you again! :)

@telstra - 502/503/504 errors still piss me off LOL!! some days are worse than others. Today is really bad......

Again - Congrats to all the team members!

@ ALL - 502 and "Post news"

during the last days amount of publications increased strong, perhaps somehow related to the last change in rules :-) and as a result the number of people who want to access the AvaxHome pages increased to a level even our new cluster network is not able to handle at realtime. Whenever too many users try to access at same time, you see the famous 502s telling you that our forntend has no more free slots to handle your request at this moment.

No matter that some people still see us as greedy, fact is that we had not been greedy enough :-) to collect the next 6000 US$ to add the next sever to the cluster.

Our technical team is currently trying different configs for the network, hoping to be able to reduce the 502s without adding a new server. While these works are ongooing, they have to disable the "Post news" command.

This is just TEMPORARY - you soon can start to publish the next 100K of publications :-)

@ bearwil

Yep, you got it :-) 10k we would nt announce :-))

@ telstra

"I swear, I spend more time here than with the family."

Oops ... we were not aware of such side-effects. :-)
Perhaps we should switch off user accounts for a few hours each week - you should at least have enough time to make sure that at least 1 or 2 new Avaxians are born :-)))

"I finally decided to post on Aug 31, 2005 at 11:29:52, id 4145."

This is exactly why we have this publication. We want to thank all our members, special the ones who took the time to create at least 1 of these 100.000 publications.

Leechers who never spent their time to create a publiaction have no idea at all how many hours of work are needed for creating 100.000 publications.

@ TurdFurgeson

"Yes that is just such wonderfull and important news that I just wet myself, and I may even have an orgasm"

Whenever the fine day will come that you move your lazy ass and create your first publiaction, you will have the best orgasm of your life :-))

@ mexpiracy

"And happy me for being 99998."

Would have been a perfect # 100.000 - hope you fully enjoyed having me watch the screen 45 minutes longer to finally face a 100.000 which could not go public :-)

@ Astor (and ALL)

what you describe is exactly the reason why Avax nad Torai founded AvaxHome in 2001. It was a small russian board, russian language only, serving the needs of russian users. After a few years Avax had the idea of using a blog so that all members can contribute directly. With this open structure more and more international users joined and language became a mix of russian and english. To take care for these changes, AvaxHome 2 was launched May 2005. But the software was much too slow to handle the increasing number of international users, so Feb 28th 2006 AvaxHome 3.0 software was laucneed. Spring 2005 we had 25.000 publications - the other 75.000 had been created in less than 1 year.

But this fast growth also brought a lot of problems. A small lrussian board you can host for free almost anywhere, a bigger board you can host for a bit of money at most providers, but no-one hosts a site like current AvaxHome. You have to buy own servers, install them at data centers and pay for each and every KB of data transfered by our users. Besides you have to spent the time to moderate such 100.000 publiactions and do the support of helping your users for whatever questions they have.

I am rather sure that there had been many days during the last months where Avax dreamed of having back the calm and easy days of his little russian board instead of the monster he now has to handle :-)

@ Avax & Torai

"Words in russian language will be added soon, sorry)"

This was a short version of: : ... added soon by Avax and/or Torai, not by Bully :-))

Maybe there's a simple way of reducing the number of posts while not affecting the number of files that can be downloaded. The last days I see numerous single posts of files that can be joined in one post. For instance 12 guitar albums or numerous new age Solitude things that are posted the same day. This does not only mean extra workload for the servers, but also a big bore and annoyance for people who are looking through the site. If I know I'm going to post say 6 John Prine albums, I'll make one post. It costs me less time and other people's files are not moving quickly to page 10 or even farther away, where they are less and less read. The mods can easily implement this rule by refusing these uploads with the message: please join these files into one post. This will make this site even more pleasant and easier to work with.
Posted By: Bully Date: 03 Mar 2007 22:10

@ bearwil

The number of new posts is not a problem for our servers - storing a publiaction is just one access (simplified explaned) to the databse. But good publications are viewd by many users, resulting in thousands of page requests our servers need to handle.

Temporary switch off is not for the traffic of creating a new publication. Processing and storing the new publication MODIFIES the databse and takes processing time, so no more accurate measurement for optimizing the normal pageloads would be possible.

Combining the publications you mention is in normal situations a better solution and would qualify them to be added to the COLLECTION sections. In this special case it is a bit different. After I inally managed to make sure that the publisher includes a readable tracklist as text (so users can search for songs by our search engine) the size of the single publications made it impossible to add them all up to a single one.
Posted By: Jozzie121 Date: 03 Mar 2007 23:50
I am so happy to have contributed to some of those numbers within the 100,000+ publications... at the moment I am giving Avaxhome a rest, LOL! No, seriously, I am also giving myself a rest and then I will contribute a bit more to arrive to the next 150,000 and 200,000 publications... and best of all, United we stand, divided we fall.

Thanks for being a wonderful community.

Congratulations..

One other thing though. Those system doctor adds are back again. I have to cancell the front page loading part way through or it gets hijacked and the system doctor page is loaded instead. In other words I cant use this site at all again. You guys really need to change your add serving company.

Congratulations!
Keep on the good work fellows!:)
Posted By: perse Date: 04 Mar 2007 01:41
to make the site more manageable you should backup and remove all posts older than 1 year. this will make it easier to create a index for searches and reduce your HD space greatly.

My luck. I was just about to post total training Microsoft Expression Web advanced when this crapped out.
Posted By: Fa Date: 04 Mar 2007 01:59
Wow. Bully and the rest of the team...you guys ara fucking excellent. (I know, not exactly an original statement but it's the best I can do at this time).
This has long been and conitues to be, the best internet community driven website.
There are a million russian or polish or ukranian or etc etc...ad infinitum, sites that have the same layout, want members to join to see links, offer llots of downloads and all of that but honestly, NOT ONE of them can even attempt to be in the same class as the one, the only, the original...
AVAXhome.
It really is the HOME of these format of sites.
I believe the other sites strive to copy what they see to be a successful format but they lack that one spark that avax will NEVER lose:
There is a friendliness and atmosphere here that, even with the recent ups and downs and even blatant hostility(!), the friendliness of avax still shines on.
I really do fucking love this place and I hope it NEVER leaves us.
Last week, when I saw the site was gone for more than a day....
I actually felt sad.
Then it progressed into a feeling or...'has it really gone? Is there REALLY going to be NO MORE AVAX?'
How am I supposed to handle such news?!

So.
I say huge congratulations on the 100,001st post and may there be many more of those!
Wow.
Oh and just because I can...one more fuck is in order so
Fucking nice one to all the people here.
Every one of us.

Fa.

ATTENTION

Since almost one hour I try to persuade our database to accept an additional text on top of this publication, but no luck ... OK, I place it here:

Creating news is currently not possible, sorry!

Upgrade and new configuration of our servers will need a bit more time.

Posted By: LedAstray Date: 06 Mar 2007 23:54
@avaxhome.ws
Something is wrong with your website.

First, you are unable to ses any pictures for the posts.

Second, there are no new posts. Today is March 6, 2007 and the last post you have up on your first page is dated March 5, 2007.

Third, when visiting any page in your website, on the lower left corner of browser, the items remaining to be downloaded take an extremely long time to finish download, even with a broadband connection.

Please repair. Thank you.

Did you even read the comment above yours, before sending that?
Posted By: maxand Date: 07 Mar 2007 00:20
@franklee, there are only 3 minutes difference between the posts of Bully and LedAstray. It seems quite possible to me that LedAstray was composing his post while Bully was posting his, therefore LedAstray would not have seen Bully's post till LedAstray's page was updated by posting. If there was a Gateway Error this would have added to the delay.
Posted By: maxand Date: 07 Mar 2007 00:26
I meant to add, thanks Bully for keeping us informed and doing your best to fix this difficult problem as quickly as possible!
Posted By: Bully Date: 07 Mar 2007 00:45

@ franklee

"Did you even read the comment above yours, before sending that?"

Yep, exactly as maxand writes. Seems LedAstray and me started almost same time to write a comment. My one was rather short, he wrote more text, so it took longer and was saved behind my one. The date-time-stamp of a comment is generated at the moment you click the SEND button.

OK, at least it works that people read my comment here :-) The database accepted the "on-top" flag for this publication, but not the additional text I wanted to have on top of Avaxhome to let you know that work is still ongoing.
Posted By: Bully Date: 07 Mar 2007 01:13

@ ALL

what you currently see most of the time is an "emegency" version of AvaxHome, running on a single server, while upgrades are done to the other servers. A few hours ago for example the main memory of the main server was upgraded to 8 GB RAM for better handling the traffic.

There are also talks about moving the servers to a better Data Center. _IF_ this happens, AvaxHome might be fully down for 1 or 2 days and new ip-addresses might take a bit more time until all DNS servers worldwide are updated. So, _IF_ this happens: Don't panic! Just a move, no death :-) Again: _IF_

If there is anything important, Avax or TDz will keep you informed.

Sorry for troubles.
Posted By: franklee Date: 07 Mar 2007 02:02
Thanks for the update and apologies to maxand for the confusion.

Perse your are right. It can go lotta more and security is more stable. Trouble is to find the man able to write the script to dispatch the bandwith between the process' and the processors. You cannnot test live, you need a prototype or a test bank, that's cost too much money for a small group.

On one hand I'm sorry Avax is down.

OTOH, since I'm trying to recover from a 400GB hard disk crash, if the two unfortunate occurances had to happen, best they happened simultaneously. For me, the good news is that I've recovered about 90% of the data on the bad disk. The bad news is that 10% of 400GB is still ~40GB, and now the bad disk will prevent my system from booting. It'll even prevent Partition Magic from booting. So I don't think I'm going to retrieve the remaining 40GB.

Hope all is better with Avax soon.

@ LQ

Yep, missing 40 GB reminds quick on the importance of good backups :-))

You should have no problems booting a partition manager direct from a floppy disk or CD. If you don't have it already, do a search at AvaxHome for "Hiren" - one of those CDs which come very handy in such situations.

Even better would be to boot a PE version of windows from CD, to avoid writes to the drive / partition you try to fix.
