This practical guide shows why the analytic methods work and how to effectively analyze and interpret epidemiologic and medical survival data with the help of modern computer systems. The introduction presents a review of a variety of statistical methods that are not only key elements of survival analysis but are also central to statistical analysis in general. Techniques such as statistical tests, transformations, confidence intervals, and analytic modeling are presented in the context of survival data but are, in fact, statistical tools that apply to understanding the analysis of many kinds of data. Similarly, discussions of such statistical concepts such as bias, confounding, independence, and interaction are presented in the context of survival analysis as well as the basic components of a broad range of applications.

The scope of the detection techniques in particle detectors is very wide, depending on the aim of the measurement. Detectors cover the measurement of energies from the very low to the highest of energies observed in cosmic rays. Stars and Atoms was the title of an Evening Dis course given at the meeting of the British Association in Oxford in August 1926. In adapting it for publication the restrictions of a time limit are removed and accord ingly it appears in this book as three lectures. Earlier in the year I had given a course of three lectures in Kings College, London, on the same topics these have been combined with the Oxford lecture and are the origin of most of the additions. A full account of the subject, including the mathe matical theory, is given in my larger book, The Internal Constitution of the Stars Camb. Univ. Press, 1926.

This monograph, suitable for use as an advanced text, presents the statistical mechanics of solids from the perspective of the material properties of the solid state. The statistical mechanics are developed as a tool for understanding properties and each chapter includes useful exercises to illustrate the topics covered. Topics discussed include the theory of the harmonic crystal, the theory of free electrons in metal and semiconductors, electron transport, alloy ordering, surfaces and polymers.

Generalized Plasticity deals with the plasticity of materials and structures. It is an expansion of the “Unified Strength Theory to Plasticity Theory”, leading to a unified treatment of metal plasticity and plasticity of geomaterials, generally. It includes the metal plasticity for Tresca materials, Huber-von-Mises materials and twin-shear materials and the geomaterial plasticity for Mohr-Coulomb materials, generalized twin-shear materials and the Unified Strength Theory.

As with many other spectroscopic techniques, Raman and infrared spectroscopy have made great progress due to recent developments in optics, detectors, nanotechnology, and computer science. There is increasing interest in the biomedical field in using these methods for diagnostic and in vivo applications. For example, explorative and rapid analysis techniques can be used to diagnose disease or dysfunction via infrared or Raman spectral fingerprints.
