Whenever I teach calculus, my emphasis is always on the fact that the basic ideas of calculus can be understood by almost anyone. While I am not always successful in proving this to the students, Sawyer certainly would be. His explanations of the basics of a derivative are the clearest, most understandable that I have ever seen. There are many diagrams, and each one has a specific purpose and they are well integrated into the textual explanations.

Anybody who liked his first geometry course will enjoy the simply stated geometric problems about maximum and minimum lenghs and areas in this book. Many of these already fascinated the greeks, for example the problem of of enclosing the largest possible area by a fence of given length, and some were solved long ago; but others remain unsolved even today. Some of the solutions of the problems posed in this book, for example the problem of inscribing a triangle of smallest perimeter into a given triangle, were supplied by world famous mathemaicians, others by high school students.

The Putnam Competition has since 1928 been providing a challenge to gifted college mathematics students. This book, the second of the Putnam Competition volumes, contains problems with their solutions for the years 1965-1984. Additional solutions are presented for many of the problems.
