Measured Tones: The Interplay of Physics and Music, Second Edition
Taylor & Francis | 2002-03-01 | ISBN: 0750307625 | English | 420 pages | PDF | 10.9 MB

There has always been a close connection between physics and music. From the great days of ancient Greek science, ideas and speculations have passed backward and forward between natural philosophers (physicists) and musical theorists. Measured Tones: The Interplay of Physics and Music, Second Edition explores the story of that relationship in an entertaining and user-friendly way. The book provides an easy-to-understand introduction to the physics involved in every stage of the music making process: from the very earliest experiments on vibrating strings and primitive sound makers to the latest concerns of digital sound recording, MP3 files, and information theory. At the same time, it examines the story of our developing concept of the universe we live in: from the ancient visions of a cosmos regulated by the music of the spheres to our current understanding of an expanding universe controlled by the laws of quantum mechanics and string theory. Running through all this is one recurring question - the so-called puzzle of consonance. Why do humans respond to music and musical sounds the way they do? It is the attempts by musicians and scientists through the ages to apply new knowledge to answer this question that gives this story its fascination. Measured Tones should provide rewarding reading for any physics teacher or student who would like to know more about music and where it impinges on their subject as well as for anyone who is musically inclined.

The Spin Structure of the Proton
KHWorld Scientific Publishing Company | 2007-11-06 | ISBN: 9812709460 | English | 212 pages | PDF | 2.9 MB

One of the main challenges in nuclear and particle physics in the last 20 years has been to understand how the proton s spin is built up from its quark and gluon constituents. Quark models generally predict that about 60% of the proton s spin should be carried by the spin of the quarks inside, whereas high energy scattering experiments have shown that the quark spin contribution is small only about 30%. This result has been the underlying motivation for about 1000 theoretical papers and a global program of dedicated spin experiments at BNL, CERN, DESY and Jefferson Laboratory to map the individual quark and gluon angular momentum contributions to the proton s spin, which are now yielding exciting results. This book gives an overview of the present status of the field: what is new in the data and what can be expected in the next few years. The emphasis is on the main physical ideas and the interpretation of spin data. The interface between QCD spin physics and the famous axial U(1) problem of QCD (eta and etaprime meson physics) is also highlighted.

Diffraction-limited Imaging With Large and Moderate Telescopes
World Scientific Publishing Company | 2007-06-20 | ISBN: 9812707778 | English | 636 pages | PDF | 4.9 MB

This book deals with the fundamentals of wave optics, polarization, interference, diffraction, imaging, and the origin, properties, and optical effects of turbulence in the Earth's atmosphere. Techniques developed during the last few decades to overcome atmospheric image degradation (including passive methods, speckle interferometry in particular, and active methods such as adaptive optics), are highlighted. Also discussed are high resolution sensors, image processing, and the astronomical results obtained with these techniques.
Science of Low Energy Nuclear Reaction: A Comprehensive Compilation of Evidence and Explanations about Cold Fusion

Science of Low Energy Nuclear Reaction: A Comprehensive Compilation of Evidence and Explanations about Cold Fusion
World Scientific Publishing Company | 2007-07-09 | ISBN: 9812706208 | English | 340 pages | PDF | 8.9 MB

One of the most important discoveries of this century cold fusion was summarily rejected by science and the media before sufficient evidence had been accumulated to make a rational judgment possible. Enough evidence is now available to show that this rejection was wrong and that the discovery of a new source of clean energy may help solve some serious problems currently facing mankind. The book catalogues and evaluates this evidence and shows why the initial reaction was driven more by self-interest than fact. This book is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand the history and science behind the cold fusion controversy. In addition to the technological importance of the effect, the discovery of new ways to initiate nuclear reactions without producing significant radiation reveals an entirely new mechanism operating at the nuclear level in solid material. This new mechanism has important implications for an understanding of many other phenomena.

Acoustic and Electromagnetic Scattering Analysis Using Discrete Sources
Academic Press | ISBN: 0122197402 | 2000-01-15 | PDF | 317 pages | 11.3 MB

The discrete sources method is an efficient and powerful tool for solving a large class of boundary-value problems in scattering theory. A variety of numerical methods for discrete sources now exist. In this book, the authors unify these formulations in the context of the so-called discrete sources method.
