Claudia Nelson, Michelle H. Martin"Sexual Pedagogies: Sex Education in Britain, Australia, and America, 1879-2000"
Palgrave Macmillan | 176 PAGES | 2004-01-03 | ISBN: 1403963509 | Hardcover | 656Kb
"Sex education" extends beyond the classroom and beyond childhood. As this collection of seven new essays shows, many kinds of texts have tried to shape their audiences' sexual understanding, from 19th-century erotica to 20th-century sermons on abstinence, marriage manuals to feminine-hygiene pamphlets, Hollywood comedies about sexual coming-of-age to picture books validating homosexuality. Together, the essays in Sexual Pedagogies seek to illustrate the many responses that Anglophone culture has had to changes in sexual mores. Focusing on three nations, this anthology examines the interplay of radical and conservative ideologies of sex, noting the influence of market forces, cultural beliefs about childhood and gender, and in some cases geopolitics. The competing agendas and assumptions of sex educators past and present have much to tell us about the society in which we live.

Palgrave Advances in the Modern History of Sexuality (Palgrave Advances)
Palgrave Macmillan | 2005-12-31 | ISBN: 1403912890 | 288 pages | PDF | 2,2 MB
This book offers an overview of approaches, methods, recent work and major debates in the history of sexuality. The two decades since the publication of Michel Foucault's seminal History of Sexuality have witnessed both a proliferation of empirical and theoretical historical studies and an increasing divergence in approaches to the writing of histories of sexuality in Europe and North America. Yet while these centrifugal trajectories have been identified in many edited collections, there has been no coherent attempt to address, or draw together, this diversity of practice and methodology. This collection aims to do just this, drawing on contributions from a range of scholars, each examining the past, present and future of the exploration of sex, as a social, cultural and historical phenomenon.

Sex and the Origins of Death
Oxford University Press, USA | 1998-06-11 | ISBN: 0195121198 | 208 pages | PDF | 2,2 MB
Death, for bacteria, is not inevitable. Protect a bacterium from predators, and provide it with adequate food and space to grow, and it would continue living--and reproducing asexually--forever. But a paramecium (a slightly more advanced single-cell organism), under the same ideal conditions, would stop dividing after about 200 generations--and die. Death, for paramecia and their offspring, is inevitable. Unless they have sex. If at any point during that 200 or so generations, two of the progeny of our paramecium have sex, their clock will be reset to zero. They and their progeny are granted another 200 generations. Those who fail to have sex eventually die. Immortality for bacteria is automatic; for all other living beings--including humans--immortality depends on having sex. But why is this so? Why must death be inevitable? And what is the connection between death and sexual reproduction?

Poststructuralism, particularly through the writings of Michel Foucault and Judith Butler, has achieved remarkable success in challenging our belief in natural sex categories and instincts. In The Ontology of Sex, Carrie Hull endorses the progressive ideals of poststructuralism while demonstrating the superiority of a realist account of sex and sexuality. Embracing biological and cultural variability, Hull nonetheless shows that the sexed body is naturally structured and deeply meaningful.

Death, Hope and Sex: Steps to an Evolutionary Ecology of Mind and Morality
Cambridge University Press | 1999-09-28 | ISBN: 052159281X | 310 pages | PDF | 2,2 MB
By showing how and why human nature is what it is, evolutionary theory can help us see better what we need to do to improve the human condition. Following evolutionary theory to its logical conclusion, Death, Hope and Sex uses life history theory and attachment theory to construct a model of human nature in which critical features are understood in terms of the development of alternative reproductive strategies contingent on environmental risk and uncertainty. James Chisholm examines the implications of this model for perspectives on concerns associated with human reproduction, including teen pregnancy, and young male violence. He thus develops new approaches for thorny issues such as the nature-nurture and mind-body dichotomies. Bridging the gap between the social and biological sciences, this far-reaching volume will be a source of inspiration, debate and discussion for all those interested in the evolution of human nature and the potential for an evolutionary humanism.

Jewish Tales of Holy Women
Jossey-Bass | 2002-08-05 | ISBN: 0787962716 | 288 pages | PDF | 2,2 MB
What is a "holy woman," or a holy man for that matter? According to the Jewish mystics, a holy person is someone who has not lost the holiness that every baby is born with. A holy person is someone who fulfills it. Stories about Jewish holy women have rarely been collected in such an engaging and entertaining form. The tales display a specifically female Jewish spirituality, giving us a peek into a world of devotional beauty that focuses on kindness. These stories of laughter and tears, humility and bravery, striving and trance, have an appeal spanning the denominational spectrum: they are spiritual nourishment for the soul. The rabbis say there are both male and female angels and angels are on earth as well as in heaven. These tales enhance our appreciation of the female angels on earth.
