World Wars and the Modern Age (American Heritage, American Voices series)
Jossey-Bass | ISBN 0471443921 | 2004-12-03 | PDF | 144 pages | 3.31 MB
Experience explosive changes in American history with the people who witnessed them! From 1870 to 1950, America experienced an unprecedented era of rapid change and growth. A host of remarkable inventions led the way in transforming this nation into a major world power, and yet the forces of change often caused tremendous upheaval in people's lives. Now, World Wars and the Modern Age provides a rare glimpse into the day-to-day experiences of Americans who lived through Prohibition, the Roaring Twenties, the Great Depression, and two world wars. You'll be there as the New York Times offices are filled with electric light for the first time. You'll watch as immigrants flock to America's colorful, fast-growing cities, hoping to start anew. You'll read a young soldier's account of going "over the top" during the grim trench warfare of World War I—and, barely twenty years later, an eyewitness account of the surprise Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor that plunged America into World War II.

Der Mann mit der Ledertasche [German]
Kiepenheuer & Witsch GmbH | ISBN 3462021850 | 1992 | PDF | 176 pages | 4.31 MB

Leonhard Euler
Birkhäuser Basel | ISBN 3764375388 | 2003-09-30 | PDF | 160 pages | 4.31 MB
Euler was not only by far the most productive mathematician in the history of mankind, but also one of the greatest scholars of all time. He attained, like only a few scholars, a degree of popularity and fame which may well be compared with that of Galilei, Newton, or Einstein. Moreover he was a cosmopolitan in the truest sense of the word; he lived during his first twenty years in Basel, was active altogether for more than thirty years in Petersburg and for a quarter of a century in Berlin. Leonhard Euler’s unusually rich life and broadly diversified activity in the immediate vicinity of important personalities which have made history, may well justify an exposition. This book is based in part on unpublished sources and comes right out of the current research on Euler. It is entirely free of formulae as it has been written for a broad audience with interests in the history of culture and science.

YOU: The Owner's Manual: An Insider's Guide to the Body that Will Make You Healthier and Younger
Collins / 0060765313 | 432 pages | ISBN: 0060765313 | True PDF | 3 Mb
If there ever was a pair of docs who can make the small intestine seem truly intriguing, here they are. Dr. Mehmet Oz is an alternative-medicine maverick and a cardiologist known to implement acupuncture during open-heart surgery. Dr. Michael Roizen developed the RealAge concept of calculating one's biological, as opposed to chronological, age. Here they've whipped up a witty guide to the workings of the entire body, appropriate not just for those who can't tell their pancreas from their pituitary. Even Cheers' Cliff Claven types who think they know it all will likely be humbled by the 50-question "body-quotient" quiz that starts off the book. With much sassy humor (they describe the adrenals as similar in shape to Mr. Potato Head's hat), they give a guided tour of the body's anatomy and major systems (hormonal, nervous, digestive, sensory, etc.) including plenty of fascinating trivia along the way. How often should you get your thyroid level checked? How much gas does the average person produce in a day? And, most important, how many times a year do most people have sex?? Drs. Oz and Roizen know. They also reveal plenty of bizarre (and potentially life-saving) facts such as this: If your earlobe has a prominent vertical wrinkle, it's likely that your arteries are aging faster than they ought to be. If only 8th-grade health class had been this fun.

You: On A Diet: The Owner's Manual for Waist Management
Free Press / (October 31, 2006) | 384 pages | ISBN: 0743292545 | PDF | 5Mb
For the first time in our history, scientists are uncovering astounding medical evidence about dieting--and why so many of us struggle with our weight and the size of our waists. Now researchers are unraveling biological secrets about such things as why you crave chocolate or gorge at buffets or store so much fat. Michael Roizen and Mehmet Oz, America's most trusted doctor team and authors of the bestselling YOU series, are now translating this cutting-edge information to help you shave inches off your waist. They're going to do it by giving you the best weapon against fat: knowledge. By understanding how your body's fat-storing and fat-burning systems work, you're going to learn how to crack the code on true and lifelong waist management. Roizen and Oz will invigorate you with equal parts information, motivation, and change-your-life action to show you how your brain, stomach, hormones, muscles, heart, genetics, and stress levels all interact biologically to determine if your body is the size of a baseball bat or of a baseball stadium. In YOU: On a Diet, Roizen and Oz will redefine what a healthy figure is, then take you through an under-the skin tour of the organs that influence your body's size and its health. You'll even be convinced that the key number to fixate on is not your weight, but your waist size, which best indicates the medical risks of storing too much fat.

Modern Wiring Practice, Twelfth Edition: Design and Installation
Newnes / 12 edition (August 22, 2005) | 352 pages | ISBN: 0750666625 | PDF | 10Mb
This compact and practical guide addresses wiring systems design and electrical installation together in one volume, creating a comprehensive overview of the whole process for contractors and architects, as well as electricians and other installation engineers. Best practice is incorporated throughout, combining theory and practice with clear and accessible explanation, all within the framework of the Wiring Regulations. Modern Wiring Practice is one of the classic handbooks for the trade, designed for a wide range of professionals. Introducing the fundamentals of design and installation with a minimum of mathematics, this book is also an essential purchase for all students of electrical installation courses, such as the 2330 Certificate in Electrotechnical Technology, and NVQs from City & Guilds (including 2356 and 2391, 2381, 2400 awards), as well as trainees in industry undertaking Apprenticeships and Advanced Apprenticeships.
Designed to provide a step by step guide to successful application of the electrical installation calculations required in day to day electrical engineering practice, the Electrical Installation Calculations series has proved an invaluable reference for over forty years, for both Foundation and Modern Apprentices, and professional electrical installation engineers alike. New learning features are now incorporated into the text. In particular, alongside the traditional long method of calculation, new calculator methods are presented to demonstrate this alternative, more simplified methodology, now often in use. Key terms are explained in a glossary section and worked examples and exercises are included throughout to maximise accessibility of the material for the reader. A complete answer section is included at the back of the book to enable readers to check their understanding of the calculations presented.

Thought and Choice in Chess
Mouton De Gruyter | ISBN 9027979146 | 1978-06 | PDF |463 pages | 3.31 MB
Adrianus Dingeman (Adriaan) de Groot (Santpoort, October 26, 1914 - Schiermonnikoog, August 14, 2006) was a Dutch chess master and psychologist, who conducted some of the most famous chess experiments of all time in the 1940s-60. In 1946 he wrote his thesis Het denken van den schaker, which in 1965 was translated to English and published as Thought and choice in chess. The studies involve participants of all chess backgrounds, from amateurs to masters. They investigate the cognitive requirements and the thought processes involved in moving a chess piece. The participants were usually required to solve a given chess problem correctly under the supervision of an experimenter and represent their thought-processes vocally so that they could be recorded.
