,,Unser heutiges militärisches Denken ist trotz der revolutionierenden Wnderungen der Krieg- und Kampfführung durch das Auftreten der Atomwaffen immer noch weitgehend von den Ereignissen auf den Schlachtfeldern von 1914118 und besonders von 1939145 beherrscht und wird es auch noch für die nächste Zukunft bleiben. Daher gehört eine gewisse Kenntnis der historischen Ereignisse zum Allgemeinwissen jedes Soldaten."
Mit diesen Worten leitete die Schriftleitung der Zeitschrift ,,Truppendienst" die im Jänner-Heft 1964 begonnene Reihe von Beiträgen über die beiden Weltkriege ein. Bis zum Herbst 1968 erschienen laufend Arbeiten, die nicht nur jeweils der Wiederkehr des 50. Jahrestages markanter Ereignisse während des Ersten Weltkrieges gedachten, sondern auch, im ganzen gesehen, ein Gesamtbild des gewaltigen Geschehens in den Jahren 1914-1918 vermittelten. Es war naheliegend, diese Beiträge zusammengefaßt und überarbeitet in Form eines Taschenbuches aus Anlaß der fünfzigsten Wiederkehr des Kriegsendes 1918 herauszugeben.
