A live recording of the Henderson & Jones Album at Poor David's Pub which captures the essence of the artist himself, and his ability to consummately entertain an audience 'en vivo' as they say in Espanol. To paraphrase Bugs, "it's my best live recording ever."

Muddy Waters transformed the soul of the rural South into the sound of the city, electrifying the blues at a pivotal point in the early postwar period. His recorded legacy, particularly the wealth of sides he cut in the Fifties, is one of the great musical treasures of this century. Aside from Robert Johnson, no single figure is more important in the history and development of the blues than Waters.

This recording of a one-time concert meeting of Bud Powell, Oscar Pettiford, and Kenny Clarke in 1960 has been reissued many times under different titles and leaders, though master of ceremonies Joachim Berendt actually introduces the group at the beginning of the concert as the Oscar Pettiford Trio. No matter who gets the credit, the trio roars through bop favorites like "Shaw Nuff," "Salt Peanuts," and Powell's own "John's Abbey." Powell, who could be rather inconsistent in live recordings at this point in his life, is flawless.

This really does not sound like a Gillespie album at all, probably its only under his name because he is more well known than Ed Bland. It is live, reasonably well recorded, and includes 10 tracks - mostly instrumental. There is no booklet - the "booklet" only includes one page. No player list, no accurate date (except its from 1969) - only track names. Stylistically it falls into soul. A soul saxophone player (playing simple and bland ideas) is the main voice throughout, although gillespie injects some more complicated solos here and there, lifting this album quite a bit in the process. Guitars, vibraphone, flutes, brass, drums and bass are also in the mix (not all in every track). Is it worth it? Maybe. Definitely not without Gillespie, but with him, its a different story. It is quite unique in Gillespie's output stylistically, which enhances its value. It is only moderately interesting musically, but is pleasent enough.

The Symphony No. 5 by Gustav Mahler was written in 1901 and 1902 mostly during the summer months at Mahler's cottage at Maiernigg. It is arguably the best known Mahler symphony. Among its most distinctive landmarks are the funereal trumpet solo that opens the work and the frequently performed F major Adagietto.

"Fables of Faubus" is a song composed by jazz bassist and composer Charles Mingus. It was written as a direct protest against Arkansas governor Orval E. Faubus, who in 1957 sent out the National Guard to prevent the integration of Little Rock Central High School by nine African American teenagers.

Recorded live at Montreux Jazz Festival on July 16, 1985; Austin Opera House on July 17-18, 1986; Dallas Starfest on July 19, 1986. Stevie Ray Vaughan is a red-hot talent whose fiery playing and passionate delivery have seen him heralded as the future of the blues, alongside such notables as Robert Cray. For 1986's LIVE ALIVE, three albums into his career, Vaughan added pianist Reese Wynans to the Double Trouble duo of Tommy Shannon and Chris Layton, fleshing out an already-potent sound. Originals like "Change It" and "Say What" find Wynan's rollicking playing gilding Vaughan's unusually funky playing, while Wynans and Vaughan play off one another in percolating covers of material by Stevie Wonder ("Superstition") and Hank Ballard ("Look At Little Sister").

Ted Horowitz aka Popa Chubby is an outstanding rockin' blues musician out of New York. While Popa has floated from several labels including his own, he has now landed with Blind Pig who has released in the States Popa's new and outstanding, "How'd A White Boy Get The Blues". While Horowitz is a capable musician, this CD is, by a large margin, the best of his pre-Pig material.

Originally released as two separate LPs (and reissued in 2004 as a double CD package) THE NIGHT OF THE COOKERS, VOLUMES 1 & 2 puts trumpeters Freddie Hubbard and Lee Morgan, two of the biggest guns of the hard-bop era, head to head throughout an extended live set.

I have most of Claude Bolling's Suites. This one to date is my favorite. The pieces on this CD contain many enjoyable melodies. I think this CD merges the classic and jazz sound the best. The transition between the piano and orchestra are very smooth. It is perhaps a little more classical sounding then the others I have. Bolling seems to develop his theme a little bit more then the other suites.
